Moving Day

One batch of chicks out of the brooder another goes in. Today we are moving the batch of Bielefelder chicks from Big Momma to our juvenile coop. The coop is to far away from our WIFI network so we will be leaving the web cam in the brooder. So you will still get to watch chicks grow up however the next breed will be Blue Isbar.

We will be renaming the Bielefelder cam to brooder cam since there will be a multitude of breeds on display not just the Bielefelder.

The Blue Isbars should be fun to watch and try to guess which are hens and which are roosters. Since the Bielefelders are an auto sexing breed we knew right away what was what. We have 6 isbar chicks that are about 4 weeks old. They will get to stay at big momma’s for a few weeks before they are moved on out to the juvenile coop.

You can see our Brooder Cam here.

Live Chicken Cam Just Installed

Our brooder “Big Mamma” just had an upgrade installed today in the way of a wireless webcam. You can check out the live feed below.

Just be warned that watching the chicks is addicting and can easily waste your day away. We warned you!!

Bielefelder and Isbar Chicks – BFF’s??????

Here is a picture of two new chicks to the farm. A Bielefelder Cockerel and an Isbar chick that seem to be best of buds.  This Isbar is one tough chick.  It is the lone survivor of an order of chicks that came in.  Sad to say his traveling companions did not make it through the trip.  So he had to befriend some of the bielefelder chickens.

Who Knew Poo Was So Desirable? Aged Composted Horse Manure Fertilizer

Load of aged horse manure fertalizer

Load of aged horse manure fertalizer

Today we sent off  2 full trailer loads of our aged composted horse manure.   The manure is heading straight to the customers  garden to be tilled into the soil.  In this part of the country it is the time to start working organic material and fertilizer into your garden areas.   If we knew that the poo was so desirable we would have started selling it years ago :)    For years we have simply spread it over our pasture but lately we can’t produce enough.  That’s saying a lot with 4 horses working on it 24 hours a day.    Move over oil there is new “black gold” in town.

White Leghorn eggs off to New Jersey!

Boxed up hatching eggs

Boxed up hatching eggs

This week we sent our first set of eggs to the state of New Jersey. There is no question our chickens are proud to know they have family all over the United States. That even includes New Jersey :) Perhaps one day, some of the chicks will show up on the Jersey Shore tv show?? You never know.

Another round of eggs in the incubator

Here is a picture from our latest setting.    39 eggs went into the incubator today.  In 3 weeks we will be hearing some little cheeps.  These eggs are for a custom order of 150 chicks delivered over several months time.   We will post pics of the chicks in about 3 weeks.

New Chick Brooder Complete!

IMG_0869
This week we completed our custom chick brooder.  The new brooder, aka “Big Momma”,  features a thermostat controlled heat lamp and a pull out drawer for easy cleaning.  All of our new hatched chicks will now have luxury accommodations for their first few weeks of life.

While “Big Momma” waits for her first house guests, she has been keeping watch over  the next batch of eggs in line for the incubator.   Three weeks from now those eggs will be visiting Big Momma again in the form of chicks.
